Synopsis
The workshop addresses educators who are interested in implementing Problem-based Learning (PBL) in an applied learning context, showcasing Republic Polytechnic’s approach to PBL. Small problems, sized for one day of learning, form the core of many modules, with RP students engaging in learning a dedicated subject or theme on each lesson day. The problem-solving process is broken down into three learning phases, with continuous holistic assessment of both a formative and summative nature.
To simulate RP’s problem solving process, the workshop is divided into three segments. Using a problem statement from the School of Engineering’s Aerospace cluster, participants can experience working in small teams using RP’s PBL approach. They will see examples of alternative approaches to a small-sized problem design. Particular attention is given to the use of RP’s rich infrastructure for applied and experiential learning. Participants will be invited to discuss success factors influencing students’ self-directed, collaborative and reflective learning.
